Paintings by Kaitlyn Zylstra

May 16 – June 27, 2015, 6-8 pm

Opening Reception May 16, with artist attending.

Kaitlyn Zylstra finds inspiration for much of her art in mathematics. “The idea that everything living is able to relate to algorithms or mathematical ratios became the most interesting point of investigations for my artwork.” She found in nature a kind of geometry. Before starting a drawing she researched the plant or animal, inside and out, its muscles and heartbeat, until the elements took shape.

Patterns are everywhere. We are always on the verge of discovery. Beneath one layer is another. Just as behind the darkest night is dawn. A thin line separating non-being and being. We see one thing and, behold, there is more. The thing that is not seen. The mystery and the miracle. Revealed through nature. In balance. Harmony. Needing and feeding off each other. At its most basic we are connected. Rooted organically in a common creation. Look again. Then again.

Kaitlyn Zylstra is an artist from Grand Rapids, Michigan. She graduated with a BFA from Kendall College of Art and Design in 2012. www.kaitlynzylstra.com
